As an Indonesian who life and live in Jogjakarta, I would like to tell world about Jogjakarta–never ending world. Jogjakarta has been replaced his face from culture city to semi metropolitan city. Local government tries to hold the culture city but globalization runs to fast. Jogjakarta must goes forward as new generations said. Old generations must die and replace with the fresh one.
Why Local Government can’t stop the globalization? Or Local Government decides to accept globalization with some assumptions? Let us see why and some realities in Jogjakarta.
Ten years ago, Jogjakarta had been the main target for poor students. Only $ 1 USD for each day, I can live in Jogjakarta, ate 3 times a day. All products are very cheap. As Gadjah Mada University arranged its status; became Commercial, lower subsidy from government, profitable target, many poor–clever students have been finding a problem to enter the university. The replacement status of UGM (Gadjah Mada University) make rich people (most of them are middle–lower clever student) easier to enter.
The main impact is Many Rich Students came to Jogjakarta. Most of them came with their money, open new business, invest on promise business. They also buy a house, car and many more. In economic perfection, the phenomena make inflation rise because of those reason. Poor students have been suffered, because their real money is decreased.
Other impacts are, significantly decreasing for another university students because of UGM has been profitable institution.
Another reality is decrease in tourism. Some years before, total of outsider visitors are significantly decrease as many factors. In my opinion on Jacky’s Opinion on this section, the phenomena is happened because too many restrictions or new laws that constraint with visitors. Visitors, most from Europeans, Americans and Australians have alcohol habits and sex (mostly, but there are no empirical study about sex).
Let us see, then local government try to establish Jogjakarta as Culture Tourism, otherwise there are many problems; no legal prostitution, no free alcohol, religion restrictions for supporting and charming visitors. Mataran Palace, Borobudur and Prambanan Temple and South Sea Parangtritis become silent and far from visitors.
